Royal London One-Day Cup, 18 May 2018, The Oval. Somerset 131-2 beat Surrey 129 by 8 wickets
The 2018 Royal London One-Day Cup campaign couldn’t have got off to a better start for Somerset. The 50 0ver a side contest lasted a total of 56 overs and five balls as Somerset romped home by early afternoon at a sun-drenched Kennington Oval.
Tom Abell won the toss and his bowlers did the rest. Craig Overton led the way taking two wickets in his first two overs to reduce Surrey to 12-3 and finishing with 4-27.
From that point the Somerset bowlers weren’t going to let Surrey back into the game. Only the 45 runs mustered by the last two home wickets gave the total a slight veneer of respectability.
Johann Myburgh was in no mood to hang around and his 75 off just 65 balls propelled Somerset to victory. The loss of two quick wickets on 35 might have dented the chase but James Hildreth settled in to play a composed supporting role (35* off 50 balls) and Somerset were home easily with 28 overs and 3 balls to spare.
It really was that easy. More of the same please.
