An unbeaten 54 by Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick saw Somerset to 113 for the loss of Matt Renshaw at lunch on he opening day at Old Trafford.
“Banger” has looked in prime form from the second over of the day when he took Tom Bailey for three 4s and despite some help from the overhead conditions all Lancashire had to show for their mornings work was the slightly fortuitous wicket of Aussie Matt Renshaw caught in the deep on the hour when he looked to become the aggressor at the start of Bailey’s second spell.
Tom Abell won the toss and elected to bat and was clearly influenced by the pitch rather than overhead conditions and the presence of James Anderson in the home side. Anderson, sporting a shock of newly bleached blond hair was tight and aggressive in both his pre-lunch spells but Trescothick remained untroubled. George Bartlett who joined Marcus with the score on 65 flirted with several deliveries outside off stump which he should have left alone but gained in confidence and fluency as his innings progressed.
There is still much work to do by the batsmen if Somerset are to fully capitalise on winning the toss but they will be the happier side at lunch
